Laurieann Gibson talks ‘Born This Way’ video and The Grammys

Many are still baffled by Lady Gaga’s dramatic Grammy entrance on Sunday, and the woman behind the egg that rocked the red carpet breaks it down for Access Hollywood – including the fact that is wasn’t an egg!

“It’s actually a vessel,” Laurieann Gibson, Gaga’s choreographer and creative director, told Access.

“She was incubating, in birthing the new race, she had to go through a DNA transition, so before she was born, we had to actually transfer her in a med box to keep the process going,” she said of the “Born This Way” singer, who emerged from the vessel with horns growing from her body.

“The vessel represents the incubation period. The time where you’ve got to deal with the pain, let it go… It’s a representation of what people feel every day,” she continued. “What really shocks me is that [the media is] trying to break this thing down. You can’t break down greatness, you’re either in or your not!”

Laurieann, who also works with Diddy, Alicia Keys, Katy Perry and The Jonas Brothers, said the Hussein Chalayan-inspired vessel took the Jim Henson Company a month to construct. However, she’d also like the public to pay as much attention to Gaga’s musical skills.

“Did you hear the way she sang? Did you see the way she danced and sang!” she told Access. “I’m gonna tell you, 80 percent of the artists… in the music industry could not hang with her singing and dancing.”

Laurieann has seen the upcoming video for Gaga’s “Born This Way,” and warns that more greatness is ahead.

“I actually saw the [music video] last night,” she added. “So, get ready… It’s beyond!”

I had noticed for the last 3 months of the Monster Ball European tour that Gaga was really beginning to dance a lot more as she sang, completing a lot more of the choreography while maintaining strong vocal delivery. That’s a challenge for any singer, and particularly one who has been choreographed by Laurieann Gibson, whose movement is challenging and highly technical. It was clear to me that BTW really was liberation for her. You could see it in her body, see it in her face, hear it in her voice. She was going through a very clear transformative process. The notable point, for me, was her performance of “You and I” in Hrvatska (Croatia). She breaks totally loose, dancing, tossing in a few James Brown stutter steps and finally literally dancing for joy.

But the Grammy performance Sunday night really slammed home how much she has matured as a dancer in a relatively short period of time. It is a beautiful, powerful piece, the pure fusion of contemporary dance with mainstream pop music in Gaga’s work. Both the song and the dance were gloriously liberated and liberating. And Gaga killed them both in a way she’s never done before. And as an artist, she literally was reborn on stage Sunday night. I think we will see even greater things from her in the future, because she’s sloughed off and shed something that weighted her down. Now it’s gone and she’s freer than she’s ever been.

Now it’s time to Dance in the Light.

Thanks for a great post. It sickens me that some have been so negative about her, the song, and the Grammy performance. It was fantastic. And she just gets better and better. Even the stars of all the great musicals of the 40′s and 50′s- or even those today on Broadway – don’t command the stage, all by themselves, for 2 hours – as she does, singing and dancing – all at the same time!
