“Lady GaGa was ‘Fearless’ as Jo Calderone”, says VMA executive producer

Video Music Awards executive producer Dave Sirulnick spoke to MTV about Jo Calderone’s appearance at this years awards. He spoke about how Lady GaGa had planned to appear as Jo several weeks ago, and how she turned up as Jo for several days before the actual award show.
We had talked to her about the creative [for the performance] a few weeks before the show. We had a call with her, and it became clear that she’s going to be Jo. She showed up as Jo, rehearsed as Jo … if you said ‘Gaga,’ she wouldn’t respond. After rehearsals, she comes over, she says to me, ‘It’s nice to meet you,’ and I say to her, ‘I know your friend Gaga,’ and she says, ‘That Gaga, what a bitch!’ She did not break character once. She walks in backstage and, in front of a whole bunch of people, went into the men’s room. Later, we had all the Young the Giant fans lined up waiting for the band to rehearse their performance, and Jo was walking out of the building to her dressing room and someone yelled ‘It’s Gaga!’ But she didn’t respond, just kept on walking, until finally someone yelled, ‘Hey, Jo!’ and then she turned and waved.
He then continued on, talking about the impact that Jo Calderone would make on the future of the Video Music Awards.
Over the years, lots of people have done lots of things, lots of people have worn lots of things, but no one has been that committed, that in character. She’s smoking in the building, she was holding court in the crowd, you know, Kanye, Katy, Adele, Tony Bennett, they loved it. They respected her commitment and her level of artistry. For her to go out there and just be so into this character, it was fearless, and you saw a lot of that at the VMAs.

Lady GaGa reveals inspiration behind her VMA performance
Lady GaGa spoke exclusively to MTV about the inspiration behind her performance at tonight’s MTV Video Music Awards. The performance, which will open the show, is top secret and GaGa only revealed a tiny bit of information about the performance.
Right now, I’m obsessed with the archetypes of our psychology and all the different people we can become or have become in the past. Our potential for the future and how do we in our minds sort of compartmentalize our different personalities. So that’s something that I’m fascinated with right now. It’s almost as if I’m reviewing my life as a play. It came as quickly as the last one did. Any good performance flows out easily. If I have to think about it too much, something is wrong.
When asked about how this ties into the music and the performance, GaGa was quick to answer.
My approach to music and performance is not just about what happens on the stage. My whole life is a performance, and it’s about pushing the boundaries of pop culture and for myself, deciding where the stage begins and ends, not allowing anyone else [to tell] me when or how I can perform. I can perform when I choose.

Laurieann Gibson chats to MTV about Lady GaGa’s VMA performance
Laurieann Gibson sat down with MTV to talk about Lady GaGa’s upcoming performance at this Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards. Refusing to give away too many details about the opening performance, Laurieann did reveal what she hopes the fans will take away from the performance.
I hope that people take the fearlessness away. The notion that you don’t have to follow what is popular and that you can constantly take the opportunity and create a new understanding of music and performing. It could mean standing under one spotlight. It could mean tons of camels and belly-dancing girls. I don’t know. One is not necessarily better than the other. But it is about the artist. It’s about ‘Who’s the artist?’ So in that one moment, you have to take it and give it all you can.
The MTV Video Music Awards take place this Sunday, 28th August in Los Angeles. Keep checking back to Lady GaGa News over the next few days for the build up to the show!

Lady GaGa chats to MTV about her duet with Cher

After recording her duet with musical legend Cher on a song she wrote called “The Greatest Thing”, Lady GaGa took time during her appearance at MTV to talk about the song, which will appear on Cher’s upcoming album.
I wrote that song a long time ago, and I’ve never put it on one of my own albums for, really, no particular reason. I always write these concept records, and it just didn’t fit in. But it’s always been, like, this big, massive, beautiful hit record and everyone always says, ‘Why don’t you put that on your album?’ And I said, ‘I don’t know, it just doesn’t fit with everything else.
Cher heard the song and loved it and wanted to do it together. And I said, ‘Fuck yeah, it’s Cher!
The song will be released in September, and is sure to be a smash!
